Attorneys for Tuscola County stabbing suspect to seek mental health evaluation

By LaNia Coleman | The Bay City Times

December 10, 2009, 6:35PM

Attorneys for a Tuscola County woman facing assault with intent to murder charges will ask a judge to order competency testing.

Lisa R. Husarick has been held at a mental health facility since her arrest in connection with the Oct. 31 stabbings of a 37-year-old man and 33-year-old woman, both of Mt. Morris, in Tuscola County’s Indianfields Township. The man is Husarick’s former husband.

Husarick, 34, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on two counts of assault with intent to murder. The charge carries a possible life sentence.

Her attorneys, Bay City-based Jason P. Gower and Adam C. Reddick, say they plan to immediately move for a competency examination.

Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark E. Reene has indicated he will back the request, Gower said.

“At the time of the alleged incident, Ms. Husarick was determined by medical providers to be mentally ill with substantial disorder of thought that significantly impairs judgment, behavior, capacity and ability to recognize reality,” Gower said. “She was diagnosed at the time of this incident as presenting with acute psychosis.”

A petition seeking the judge’s order states that Husarick, “... is still very confused and unable to understand what has occurred, she is at times still delusional and sporadically brings up past information.”
